Barring an unforeseen last-minute snag, Strikeforce to fold; Ronda Rousey and others headed to UFC

Multiple sources confirmed to Yahoo! Sports Thursday that Zuffa has reached a deal with Showtime to end the Strikeforce promotion sometime early in 2013, a move that will bring superstar Ronda Rousey into the UFC.

Neither UFC president Dana White nor UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta could be reached for comment on Strikeforce's demise, which was first reported Thursday by TMZ. Chris DeBlasio, a spokesman for Showtime, which has broadcast Strikeforce events since 2009, declined comment.

The plan is for the promotion to fold after a Jan. 12 card in Oklahoma City, in which all of the Strikeforce men's champions will defend their belts. A source stressed that nothing has been signed and, thus, things could change.

That, however, appears unlikely, given the frequently rocky relationship between White and Showtime officials. Folding the promotion into the UFC would also follow Zuffa's pattern.

Zuffa purchased Strikeforce from Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment in March 2011, reportedly for more than $40 million. Given that Zuffa had previously purchased competitors PRIDE, World Fighting Alliance and World Extreme Cagefighting and merged them into the UFC, speculation mounted almost instantly about Strikeforce's future.

Strikeforce cards in September and November were canceled as the tensions between the sides heated.

White told Yahoo! Sports late last month that Rousey, Strikeforce's bantamweight champion, would fight in the UFC one day, a statement that marked an abrupt change of position. White had previously said there weren't enough quality women to form a division in the UFC and that he saw no sense doing what he termed "one-off" fights.

But Rousey, an Olympic bronze medalist in judo who has become a sensation with her meteoric rise in MMA, changed his mind. He said he was blown away by Rousey's ability to both fight and promote.

Look, I know a lot of people are going to say we're doing this because she's pretty. But [ex-Strikeforce star] Gina [Carano] was pretty, too. Ronda is a whole other story. She's nasty. She's a real fighter. She not only likes to win, she likes to finish. Think about this: Everyone she fights knows what is coming, that armbar of hers, and no one can stop it. They have a whole [expletive] training camp to prepare for that one move and nobody has been able to stop it yet.

People who are nasty and technically sound and have that attitude, I love them. She's an Olympic medalist and she's got a great history, but she's in the gym all the time. She's a dude in a girl's body. She loves to beat the [expletive] out of people and she's serious about getting better. She's not saying, 'I'm the champ and I've beaten everyone in the first round,' and taking a victory tour. She's up there in Stockton working with the Diaz brothers, trying to get better.

Details are sparse about how the merger will work and when Strikeforce fighters will begin appearing on UFC cards.

White, though, likes to do things in a major way and it wouldn't be a shock to see Rousey defend her belt in February in Las Vegas on the UFC's annual Super Bowl weekend card. That's one of the company's biggest shows of the year and, given that Rousey hasn't fought since defeating Sarah Kaufman on Aug. 18, would be a perfect launching point for her career.

Whether she will be the first woman to actually fight in the cage is questionable. When Strikeforce ends, the UFC will assume the contracts of its women's fighters. White told Yahoo! Sports last month that women such as ex-champions Miesha Tate and Cris "Cyborg" Santos and Sara McMann, a wrestling silver medalist at the 2004 Olympics, would also fight in the UFC.

Other elite fighters in Strikeforce who would be headed to the UFC include heavyweight Daniel Cormier, middleweight champion Luke Rockhold, lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez and welterweight champion Nate Marquardt. Melendez is rated seventh in the current Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound ratings.

Several fighters took to social media Thursday evening to comment. Tate wrote on Twitter, "So Stoked to be fighting for the @ufc it's been a dream of mine for along time! SO happy it's finally come true:-D" UFC middleweight contender Brian Stann also seemed to tweet confirmation of the news.

Watch Cung Le knock Rich Franklin out and more from UFC Macau

The UFC headed to Macau on Saturday, and Cung Le celebrated by knocking Rich Franklin out. Really out. Faceplant into the canvas out. Possibly out before he hit the ground out. Awkwardly falling to the ground out. See for yourself. The fight footage starts about 35 seconds in:

After debuting in the UFC with a loss to Wanderlei Silva, 40-year-old Le has two straight wins. He wants to take off time before his next fight, because he went straight from his win over Patrick Cote in July to training for this fight. After his well-earned vacation, expect to see him against a tough opponent.

Thiago Silva also had an impressive performance, submitting Stanislav Nedkov in the third round. (Skip to the 29-second mark for the submission.)

The win ends a rough streak in Silva's career. His last win was a TKO of Keith Jardine in 2009. Since then, he lost to Rashad Evans, was suspended for using a banned substance in his fight with Brandon Vera and had his win changed to a no-contest, and then lost to Alexander Gustaffson.

The rest of the card's results:
Dong Hyun Kim def. Paulo Thiago via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27).
Takanori Gomi def. Mac Danzig via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28).
Jon Tuck def. Tiequan Zhang via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28).
Takeya Mizugaki def. Jeff Hougland via unanimous decision (30-25, 30-27, 30-27).
Alex Caceres def. Motonobu Tezuka via split decision (28-29, 30-27, 30-27)
John Lineker def. Yasuhiro Urushitani via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)
Riki Fukuda def. Tom DeBlass via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

10 things every MMA fan needs to know about judging

There are hundreds of MMA fights around the country every weekend. Each fight needs qualified judges to score the action, but the growth of MMA means there aren't enough judges to go around.

Over the weekend, I sat in on an MMA judging clinic by Association of Boxing Commissions-certified trainer Robert Hinds of Combat Consulting. (The ABC is the group that oversees the state commissions that administer MMA across the United States.) The clinic gives prospective judges to be a place to start their judging career, and several state commissions require certification from an event like the one I attended. Whether you want to be a judge or not, every MMA fan should know something about how winners and losers are chosen when fights go to decisions. Here is what you need to know:

1. Judges look at result of the move, not the move itself. It's not about the takedown. It's about what happens from the takedown. It's not about the punch. It's about if the punch lands, and if it has an impact.

2. Judges are not fans. If they are scoring as fans, they should be fired. Judges have to be dispassionate and objective in every fight they judge. If they are a fan of one fighter or another, they need to reconsider their job.

3.Media, fans and promoters have no business comparing their score cards to those of judges. When I'm covering fights, I'm watching the fights, taking notes, tweeting and answering emails, text messages and instant messages. When fans watch the fights, they watch the fights, order beers, talk with friends, and check out the waitress who just delivered another plate of wings. When a promoter watches the fights, he or she is watching the fights, keeping an eye on the broadcast, dealing with inevitable problems on every fight card, and talking with fans and staff.

When a good judge is watching a fight, he or she is watching the fight. That's it. He or she has been trained on how to focus on the fight and see what has affected the round. Every bit of their brain power is focused on the fight. I've never had a judge tell me how to cover a story. I shouldn't try to do their job, and neither should you.

4. Positioning  matters. With three judges around the cage, each one will not see the same thing. Sometimes a judge will not see a punch because only a fighter's back is visible. While monitors help in this situation, they're not everywhere yet and they are not a cure all. The judge is then limited to the view decided by the director of the show. If you're wondering what fight a judge watched, realize that it may not be the exact same one you saw on television.

5. Judges score rounds, not fights. When a round ends, the judge should score it and forget it. What happened in round one should not affect what score a judge gives in round three. In fact, Hinds recommended the use of individual score cards for each round so that judges are not influenced by their previous score.

6. 10-10 rounds are rare. Hinds described 10-10 rounds as a "unicorn." In a five-minute round, or even a three-minute round, something should happen that will give one fighter the edge over another. An observant judge should be able to catch it. 10-8 rounds have a specific definition: complete domination and significant impact for the entire round. If you don't see both, it's not a 10-8.

7. Judges can do nothing but judge. If a foul is not called by a ref, the judge cannot deduct a point. If a fighter's corner is giving the fighter terrible advice, the judge cannot give the fighter the benefit of the doubt. If the matchmaker came up with a terrible fight, the judge cannot take a round off and expect the knockout. The judge can judge the round. That's it.

8. What makes a bad judges is not the results they give, but their methods in judging and not using the criteria. Judges have a criteria and professional standards to follow. They need to carefully judge rounds, staying focused the entire time on using the criteria to call a winner in each round. If they are looking away, talking to someone, or eating or drinking during a round, that's a problem. If they can't say how the criteria applied to their judgment, that's a problem.

9. Not everyone can be a judge. During the clinic, we watched several fights to practice judging. Five minutes at a time, we practiced focusing on the fight and nothing else. It took me about a minute before my mind wandered. On Saturday night, we sat cageside for amateur fights so we could practice what we learned during the day. MMA's brutality is in your face from that distance. One man from the clinic confessed  being so close to the action was emotional.

Judges have to be focused, and they cannot be squeamish. If you're not OK with listening to fighters get hit in the head, or hearing their bones crunch throughout their fights, or having blood and sweat fly onto your face, don't be a judge.

10. Judging ain't easy. Much like any profession, judges don't wake up one day and decide it's time to start judging UFC fights. Someone hoping to be a qualified judge has to practice by judging fights on television and judging sparring sessions at nearby gyms. They attend clinics and shadow judges in amateur fights before trying it themselves, then do the same routine before trying a professional fight.

With the growth of MMA from the amateurs on up the UFC, the sport needs good judges. If you think you can contribute to the sport in this way, contact your state commission.

Gray Maynard, Shane Carwin out of their upcoming bouts with injuries

If it weren't for bad luck, the UFC would have no luck at all. After scrambling on Tuesday to make changes to December bouts, they had to deal with two more big injuries on Wednesday.

-- According to UFC president Dana White's Twitter feed, "The Ultimate Fighter" coach Shane Carwin blew out his knee. He had to pull out of his fight with fellow coach Roy Nelson that was scheduled for the show's season finale. White said they are looking for a new opponent.

-- Not long after White's tweet, the UFC tweeted the other bad news of the day. Gray Maynard is also injured. He had to withdraw from his bout with Joe Lauzon. Jim Miller has stepped in and will face Lauzon at UFC 155.

Cindy Crawford once distracted Georges St-Pierre during a fight

If Carlos Condit wants to divert Georges St-Pierre's attention during their fight on Saturday night, he just needs to surround the octagon with beautiful women. GSP recently admitted his mind did wander once, and Cindy Crawford is to blame.

One time I was fighting against BJ Penn. I had his back against the fence. I'm not kidding you, for a few seconds I look and I was staring at a beautiful woman in the audience. It was ... uh ... (snaps fingers) Cindy Crawford. I stared at her. I'm thinking, 'My God, she's so beautiful. And she's looking at me.' And just next to her, I see her husband looking at me and I'm like, 'Oh my God. I can't look at her. Her husband's looking at me.' Now I'm thinking, 'Of course, they're looking at me. I'm doing the show right now and I'm in the middle of the fight.' So I'm like, 'Go back to your focus' (laughs).

Crawford, once one of the world's most well-known supermodels, is also a big UFC fan. An older video shows her getting Matt Hughes' signature on her chest, and she's been cageside for multiple UFC events.

There is no word on if she will be at UFC 154 this weekend, so Condit may want to have another plan in place than hoping GSP gets distracted. After all, GSP won both of his bouts against B.J. Penn.

Matt Hughes isn’t retired yet, but headed towards it

It's been more than a year since UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes was knocked out by Josh Koscheck at UFC 135. At 39, he has a career record of 45-9, and was the UFC welterweight champion twice with a total of seven defenses. With that sort of career, is it time for him to call it quits?

On the MMA Hour, Hughes said maybe. Since his last fight, he's sold his gym, and spent time raising his four kids and working on the family farm with his twin brother.

"I wouldn't say I've closed the door [on my career], but I've got my hand on the door handle," Hughes said. "You know it's been over a year since I've fought, and I've having a good time with my family raising my kids, which I think is a bigger thing than me competing, making sure my family is raised right. So I'm having a good time at home with the family, and kind of, maybe, lost the desire just a little bit to compete. I'm not retired yet, but it is looking like that's where I'm going."

Hughes said both his wife and UFC president Dana White have both gently encouraged him to hang it up. If he does, he wants to stay involved in MMA by working to improve the quality of judging.

Does Hughes have anything left to prove or is it a good time for him to hang it up? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Georges St-Pierre talks about how he was ‘obsessed’ after loss to Matt Serra

In 2006, Georges St-Pierre won the UFC welterweight championship, then quickly lost it to Matt Serra. Getting the belt back became an obsession for GSP. He talks about that obsession, and talks through the rematch with Serra here.

By the time he steps into the cage to fight Carlos Condit on Saturday at UFC 154, 1,673 days will have passed since he beat Serra. He beat Jon Fitch, B.J. Penn, Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy, Josh Koscheck and Jake Shields to hold onto the shiny piece of metal and leather. Save the win over Penn, GSP didn't finish any of those fights. Still, he's dominated his division for four years. Will that domination continue this weekend? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Reader Rants: You speak up on Anderson Silva, Miesha Tate and more

As usual, Cagereaders are a wonderfully verbose group of people. Here are some of their thoughts on the biggest stories in MMA. Want to make the next Reader Rants? Like Cagewriter on Facebook, then comment on stories.

What's the next move for UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva? There's not many who don't want to see him fight UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones.

Jones of course. That's the only fight that interests me right now. I don't think I'd get another Silva fight. No point, if you know what the outcome will be in advance. -- Randy Huey

Silva has already defeated the greatest wrestlers the UFC has to offer; I like GSP but c'mon. -- Nathan W. Collier

If I really could pick as I've said before Spider would drop down and take GSP's belt (if he could) then go back up and take Jones belt. (If he could.) That would be great. -- Eric Wolfe

Plenty of you spoke up on Miesha Tate's thoughts on men hitting women.

I think it's important to define attack. If someone, man or woman, is about to cause you serious harm then why would you just let them. -- Gabriel Gonzalez

This is the issue with embracing your fighters use of social media. Sometimes, they'll say something you'd really wish they hadn't. -- Rob Stevens

Forrest Griffin will now fight Phil Davis, and you spoke up on how you think that fight will go at UFC 155.

Davis looked awesome in his last fight against Prado. I think he is going to totally dominate Forrest. Forrest is one of my favs, but Davis has way better wrestling skills and should be able to take Forest down at will and dominate on the ground. I say, Anaconda Choke, 3rd round. -- Josh Baer

Davis may literally murder him. Knocked on your [expletive] twice against Tito. Pfeh. -- Andrew Salvage

Cyrille Diabate, Ivan Menjivar big winners on UFC 154 preliminary card

The preliminary card of UFC 154 had a little bit of everything. Cyrille Diabate picked up a win with a fight that packed three-rounds worth of action into a half-round. Diabate leveled Chad Griggs early with a punch, but Griggs turned the fight around with a takedown. But Griggs could only hold on for so long as his nose leaked blood. Diabate took Griggs' back and won with a rear naked choke at 2:24 in the first round.

John Makdessi pulled the upset by jab, jab, jabbing his way to a 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 win over Sam Stout.

Using unrelenting leg kicks, Antonio Carvalho picked up the decision win over Anderson Silva protege Rodrigo Damm.

Ivan Menjivar may have already locked up UFC 154's Submission of the Night bonus with a nasty armbar of Azamat Gashimov. He locked it up at 2:44 of the first.

In other UFC 154 preliminary action:

Darren Elkins def. Steven Siler via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Matthew Riddle def. John Maguire via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Ronda Rousey reportedly to be the first female UFC fighter

A report from TMZ says Ronda Rousey, the Strikeforce bantamweight champion, will be one of the first two women to fight in the Octagon. According to the report, Rousey will defend her title in the UFC in 2013.

Rousey has taken the fight world by storm since debuting as a pro in May of 2011. The 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in judo has six straight wins. All were first-round submissions. She has also reached levels of popularity only known to the most elite fighters. Rousey was on the cover of ESPN the Magazine's "Body Issue," and headlined two Strikeforce shows in 2012.

An opponent has not been named, but a rematch with Miesha Tate or a grudge match with Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos are both possibilities.

The other wrinkle to TMZ's report is that the Strikeforce show on Jan. 12 will be the promotion's last. As we mentioned Thursday, the January fights will have every male Strikeforce champion defend his belt, so it would be a fitting end to the promotion. With Rousey, one of their most bankable stars, headed to Strikeforce's sister company, there won't be many draws left.

Election 2012: Georges St-Pierre or Carlos Condit?

With the election on Tuesday, you're likely sick of campaign commercials. Perhaps you change the channel when they come on, or you start watching shows after you've been recording for a few minutes so you can fast forward, or you start singing Spice Girls songs really loudly over the ads so you don't hear them. (Maybe that's just me.)

But these ads are worth your time. This November, you have to choose between two candidates: Carlos Condit and Georges St-Pierre. Hear first from Carlos Condit, the interim title holder who comes from a political family. Condit's father served as chief of staff under New Mexico governor Bill Richardson.

And now, the long-serving champion: Georges St-Pierre.

Who will you choose? The UFC is running a vote here.

Anderson Silva to appear in Steven Seagal’s next film

Action movie star and all-around ... interesting guy Steven Seagal has supported Anderson Silva several times in the UFC middleweight champion's career. He reportedly taught him the kick Silva used to knock out Vitor Belfort. Now, Silva will get a chance to return the favor. He told Globo that he will have a role in Seagal's next film.

"I'm going to Los Angeles to record a movie with Steven Seagal. I'm very excited about this new phase. I'm preparing," Silva said.

The Internet Movie Database doesn't have Seagal in the production stages of any movies, so we don't know exactly which film Silva and Seagal are working on. A rumor circulated in April that Seagal would be in the next sequel to "Expendables," the movie that starred Randy Couture and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

But Silva already has plenty of training in acting. He is a commercial king, and starred in "Never Surrender," the 2009 film that also had Georges St-Pierre and B.J. Penn in it. It's still shocking that "Never Surrender" was snubbed by the Oscars and Golden Globes.

Thanks, MMA Mania.

Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson says UFC owes him for lost privacy

Despite a long, winning career with the UFC, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson has had a rough relationship with the promotion recently. In an interview he did with Middle Easy (transcribed by Bloody Elbow) Jackson said the UFC hasn't compensated him well enough for his loss of privacy.

Leaving the UFC would make me happy. I don't think there's anything they can do to fix it. I don't think they're even willing to fix it. I'm not upset with them. The UFC is a great organization, they've done a lot of great, positive things for the sport. It's mainstream now. I can't walk anywhere without people wanting a picture or attention or talking or anything. That's good, that's what people like. I just feel like...honestly, I just wish I could be compensated a little bit more for the privacy that I gave up. People don't understand that. I traded my privacy and my kids' privacy for...the living that I'm making now which is...Football players and basketball players these days, they're making MILLIONS!

Now, what's odd about this statement is not that Jackson wants more money. Who doesn't want to be paid more for their job? But Jackson's popularity is not solely due to the UFC. He was a beloved fighter with Pride before fighting with the UFC. He has been in several movies. He starred in "The A-Team," a movie that made $177 million at the box office internationally. He does autograph signings, and has appeared on talk shows and on the WWE Raw show.

[Related: Bruce Lee's impact on MMA felt decades after his death]

If privacy was the concern, Jackson could have kept a lower profile. He didn't. He chose to go into movies and fulfill its publicity requirements. He chose to sign on with sponsors who required he make appearances. He chooses to tweet pictures of him and his family. If privacy was his biggest concern, he could have just been a fighter.

His concerns are about money, and you know what? That's OK. A lot of people grumble about how much they are paid. It makes Jackson more like a regular guy. Just don't couch it in lost privacy.

Sergio Moraes wins at UFC 153, then has awkward celebration

At UFC 153, Sergio Moraes pulled out his first UFC win. He beat Renee Forte with a rear-naked choke in the third round of their preliminary card bout. After releasing the choke, Moraes held on to Forte for a celebratory kiss.

OK, if these two wanted to smooch, that's cool. But it seemed like Forte was uncomfortable with Moraes' celebration. In the future, Sergio, ask before smooching.
