Sergio Moraes wins at UFC 153, then has awkward celebration

At UFC 153, Sergio Moraes pulled out his first UFC win. He beat Renee Forte with a rear-naked choke in the third round of their preliminary card bout. After releasing the choke, Moraes held on to Forte for a celebratory kiss.

OK, if these two wanted to smooch, that's cool. But it seemed like Forte was uncomfortable with Moraes' celebration. In the future, Sergio, ask before smooching.

Chael Sonnen didn’t show at Anderson Silva’s barbecue

Remember how before Anderson Silva beat Chael Sonnen at UFC 148, Sonnen said he wanted Silva's wife to make him a steak, and then after the fight, Silva invited Sonnen to a a barbecue? Well, the barbecue happened, but Sonnen didn't show.

Silva says it wasn't just some hamburgers on the grill affair, but a true Brazilian gaucho barbecue. Sonnen now has his sights on UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, and he's forgotten all about his pal Andy.

Thanks, Fightlinker.

MMA Marketplace: Stephan Bonnar’s ‘We Step Up’ shirt

Stephan Bonnar was in kinda retirement when he stepped up to take the UFC 153 fight with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. His actions are reflected in the shirt he wore to the open workout in Rio de Janeiro this week.

The "Spider Knows" shirt from Nike that Silva wore wasn't up for sale on Nike or MMA websites, but Bonnar's is available for $27.99.

Fighter shows why you’re supposed to protect yourself at all times (VIDEO)

Sometimes, MMA fighters will try to make their fight exciting by dropping their hands and daring their opponent to hit them. UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva did it in his easy win over Stephan Bonnar, and Nick Diaz is quite well known for making this move.

To beg for a punch, a fighter should have confidence in his or her chin. He or she should be positive that this won't happen:

Yep, that's why the referees remind fighters to protect themselves at all times.

Thanks, With Leather.

Wrestling: CM Punk backhands fan during WWE Monday Night Raw

Pro wrestling is to MMA what the McRib is to slow-cooked Memphis barbecue, but every once in awhile, pro wrestling gets a little too real.

On Monday night in Sacramento, WWE wrestler CM Punk apparently went off-script during a sequence with WWE chairman Vince McMahon and backhanded a fan in the stands. The initial assumption is that it was staged — even a heart attack, is initially suspect — but a WWE statement released Tuesday afternoon to Yahoo! Sports makes it clear this was not part of the show:

"During last night's Raw televised event, WWE Superstar CM Punk exited the ring into the stands as part of the show. WWE security was unfortunately not in the appropriate place at the time. Given CM Punk's persona as a 'bad guy,' fans were naturally heckling him, but unfortunately a few fans began shoving him and one struck in him in the kidney and on the back. WWE regrets that proper security measures were not in place, and CM Punk apologizes for reacting in the heat of the moment. Other than this isolated incident, WWE always provides proper security to ensure the safety of our fans and our performers."

Amateur video of the event shows that Punk just flat-out lost his temper with fans badgering him. And, as is so often the case in these audience brawls, Punk apparently went after the wrong guy.

Laura Cole, a Sacramento CBS reporter, sought out the fan whom Punk decked. According to Cole's Twitter feed, the fan "says he never hit Punk," and that "his face is a little warm. … He also says Punk broke his glasses." Cole further noted that the fan was filing paperwork with local law enforcement.

So what went wrong here? As you can see in the above video, Punk was almost completely swarmed by fans in the stands. Still, he's got to figure that at a wrestling match, people might just be a little hyped up. So, yes, while a lack of WWE security might have played a role, fundamentally it's on Punk to keep in control.

More on this as it develops.

Georges St-Pierre agrees with ‘boring’ criticism

Heading into his UFC 154 bout with Carlos Condit, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is riding a nine-fight win streak. Dating back to UFC 69, when he lost the belt to Matt Serra, GSP has not lost. However, his last win by a stoppage was in January of 2009, when he TKOed B.J. Penn. Since then, he won five-round decisions over Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy, Josh Koscheck and Jake Shields.

The run of decisions has brought about criticism from fans who call the longtime champ "boring." As he has rehabbed from a knee injury over the past year, GSP has heard the criticism, and guess what? He agrees.

"I agree with the criticism," St-Pierre told The New York Post. "I want to do better. I want to give more entertainment to the fans."

Do you think you'll see a more exciting GSP at UFC 154? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

John Dodson Earns Top Contender Status: UFC on FX’s “Browne vs. Bigfoot” Main Card Rundown

Free MMA on TV is always good, and the three opening main card fights on UFC on FX: "Browne vs. Bigfoot" made something "good" into something "awesome".  A young buck took on a salty veteran, a flyweight established himself as the number one contender, and a pair of welterweight scrapped in a rematch that was six years in the making.  Here's how the bouts went down:

  • Justin Edwards seemed to want to make a statement in his bout against Josh Neer, and that statement was, "Goodnight, sleep tight!"  Rushing forward with both guns blazing, he forced the veteran fighter to duck his head and seek a takedown — a move that enabled the Jorge Gurgel-trained fighter to jump into an arm-in guillotine attempt.  Neer took the fight to the mat, but before he could truly defend, he was asleep, and Edwards was awarded the win via technical submission at :45 of Round 1.

  • What happens when you pit a pair of the best flyweights in the world against each other with top contender status on the line?  Caution mixed with sudden violence.  In the opening round of John Dodson versus Jussier Formiga, tentativeness ruled the day, with both men wary of the other and circling, circling, circling long after the crowd began showering them with boos.  But they went at it in Round 2, with the TUF winner catching the Shooto Brasil champ with a left that put him on his butt, and then dropping him again with a body blow/left to the grill combo.  Formiga rolled to his stomach and covered up, and his defenselessness in the face of Dodson's fistic barrage forced the referee stoppage at 4:35 of Round 2.

With the win, the personable Dodson earned first crack at champ Demetrious Johnson.

  • They met years before in the International Fight League, and back then, it was Jay Hieron who took the decision over the relatively inexperienced Jake Ellenberger.  This time, however, the shoe was on the foot.  Was it the most exciting bout ever?  No, not really, but there were enough flashes of action to make it interesting. In the opening round, both men appeared cognizant of the other's ability to land counters, so what followed was a lot of dancing, with Hieron constantly firing off a variety of long-range kicks and punches, and Ellenberger trying to land one of those deadly bungalows he's been known to wield.  Though neither truly established dominance in the first, the second saw Ellenberger nailing the takedown, and the minute of ground and pound he was able to get in opened a cut near Hieron's eye.  Not much happened in Round 2, although Ellenberger did seem to catch his foe at the bell.  The end result: a unanimous decision for Ellenberger.

Anderson Silva cheers on ‘Big Nog,’ plays doctor in your Spider images of the day

After Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera beat Brendan Schaub at UFC 134, Nogueira's friends and training partners broke out in a jubilant celebration. At UFC 153, he took out Dave Herman, and his friends reacted even more emotionally.

Man, it's getting a little dusty in here. (Wipes tears from eyes.) UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva begins to cry when seeing his friend's triumph. This was Nogueira's first fight since having his arm broken by Frank Mir in December, so you could see why it was so meaningful for Silva and the rest of the group.

After watching Nogueira's win, Silva went on to win easily over Stephan Bonnar. Then, he went to the hospital and took care of Fabio Maldonado, the fighter who somehow survived two rounds with Glover Teixeira.

Are there any fighters who can beat Jon Jones?

Jon Jones' win on Saturday night was awe-inspiring. He survived a grotesque armbar, and came back to win with fourth-round submission. He seems to keep getting better and better with each fight, this time incorporating jiu-jitsu skills into his win. At the moment, he appears unbeatable.

Are there any fighters in the UFC who can eventually take him on and win? Any fighters who can take time to study Jones, figure out his every move, and then finally solve the Jon Jones puzzle?

Dan Henderson: The one-time PRIDE and Strikeforce champion was supposed to fight Jones before he was injured and UFC 151 was canceled. He has already put in the time and effort to fight Jones, and may already have him figured out. His age is an issue, but Henderson still wants the fight.

Alexander Gustaffson: One of Jones' biggest advantages is his reach. He was able to hold Belfort at bay throughout the fight by simply extending his arm. At 6-foot-5, Gustafsson is an inch taller. He has a fight lined up with former champ Mauricio "Shogun" Rua who will show if "The Viking" is ready for the next step.

Chael Sonnen: Based on Sonnen's inability to handle Anderson Silva in their last fight, there is no reason to believe Sonnen could beat Jones. However, the run-up to the fight would be so much fun. Considering the UFC put Jones up against a middleweight who lost a title shot, integrity of the belt doesn't matter as much as entertainment or making money. Sonnen has already shown he can get under Jones' skin in a way no one else has, and that just may give him the edge in a bout.

Anderson Silva: Could he beat Jones? Yes. Will this fight ever, ever happen? No. Silva keeps talking about wanting a fight with welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, and he does have a few challenges waiting for him at middleweight.

Who is missing from this list? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Matt Hughes isn’t retired yet, but headed towards it

It's been more than a year since UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes was knocked out by Josh Koscheck at UFC 135. At 39, he has a career record of 45-9, and was the UFC welterweight champion twice with a total of seven defenses. With that sort of career, is it time for him to call it quits?

On the MMA Hour, Hughes said maybe. Since his last fight, he's sold his gym, and spent time raising his four kids and working on the family farm with his twin brother.

"I wouldn't say I've closed the door [on my career], but I've got my hand on the door handle," Hughes said. "You know it's been over a year since I've fought, and I've having a good time with my family raising my kids, which I think is a bigger thing than me competing, making sure my family is raised right. So I'm having a good time at home with the family, and kind of, maybe, lost the desire just a little bit to compete. I'm not retired yet, but it is looking like that's where I'm going."

Hughes said both his wife and UFC president Dana White have both gently encouraged him to hang it up. If he does, he wants to stay involved in MMA by working to improve the quality of judging.

Does Hughes have anything left to prove or is it a good time for him to hang it up? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Longtime MMA figure Jeff Blatnick dies

Jeff Blatnick, a longtime figure in MMA as a judge, official and announcer, died after complications from heart surgery at the age of 55.

Blatnick was involved with the UFC from its early days. He was the commentator for UFC 4 through UFC 32, and as UFC commissioner was instrumental in the sport's evolution into the regulated sport we know today. He stuck with the sport as a well-respected judge.

Nick Lembo, the head of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, remembered Blatnick as key to the growth of MMA.

"Jeff will always be a crucial part of the formation and growth of MMA. He was a great judge and even refereed here. Far more than that, he was one of the best men I ever was graced with the pleasure of calling my friend," Lembo said to Cagewriter.

"I just spoke to him last week when he was appointed as a judge by the State of Washington Commission to officiate December 8 for the UFC on FOX Show," UFC vice president of regulatory affairs Marc Ratner said via email. "Very sad. He was one of the pioneers of the sport and was there at the very beginning of MMA in 1993. He was involved in formulating the Unified Rules of MMA and was one of the top MMA judges in the world."

UFC president Dana White also remembered Blatnick by tweeting, "RIP Jeff Blatnick."

Before Blatnick started with MMA, he was a highly decorated wrestler. He qualified for the Olympic team in 1980, but didn't compete because of the boycott. In 1982, he was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma. He fought back to make the Olympic team again, and Blatnick won Olympic gold in 1984. Though a return of cancer forced his retirement, he continued to support wrestling as a coach and commentator.

Benson Henderson talks about fighting close to home, network television pressures and soccer moms

UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson will get to fight Nate Diaz at the next UFC on Fox card. Henderson talked to Cagewriter about how he is excited about the chance to fight at home, what network television means to him, and soccer moms.

Henderson's fight is the main event at UFC on Fox 5 in the Key Arena, the former home of the Seattle Supersonics. He grew up just a half hour from the arena and went to basketball games there, but he has never fought in his home state. His previous visits to the Key Arena were as a fan.

"I didn't have the money to go to a ton of Sonics games, but when I went, I would go to Key Arena. Not only my first time ever in Washington, but to have it in Seattle. Not only in Seattle, but to have it in Key Arena. Not only is it in Key Arena, but I'm  the main event."

Expect to hear a crowd squarely in Henderson's corner.

"Five minutes after they announced it, I had 20 calls and texts. I've got a ton of messages and tweets and emails from my buddies. There's going to be a large pro-Ben Henderson crowd."

The last time Henderson was on a Fox card, his fight didn't make the network airing. His bout with Clay Guida was on the undercard of the UFC's first fight on Fox. The only bout that was on Fox was Junior dos Santos' quick knockout of Cain Velasquez. This time, Henderson knows he'll make the airing because his fight is the main event.

"This time on Fox, I get to be the actual guy on Fox, so I'm really excited about that. My first time on Fox, it was the first time the UFC was on Fox and it was so hyped and it was so big, and then, I wasn't really on Fox. They didn't show me, and it was so hyped up. I'm stoked this time to be the main event."

But he says fighting on network television in front of a home crowd doesn't put more pressure on him.

"There's no additional pressure. The pressure I place on myself, the standards I hold myself to are higher than anyone else's."

In fact, Henderson is happy to get back to more accessible television. While fighting for World Extreme Cagefighting, Henderson would appear on cable TV regularly as his fights would often be rerun on Versus. This ended up winning him fans from surprising backgrounds.

"A few times I've been shocked by the people who recognize me. And not because their kid is a fan, but they are fans. Soccer moms will say to me, 'I saw you on TV the other day! I love watching you!' and I'll ask, 'Did you watch with your son?' and they say, 'No, I was flipping channels while I was cooking dinner and I started watching you.'  That's happened a bunch of times. Going through my local grocery store, and I met a lady whose a crazy fan. She always watches. She saw from when I was on Versus. I think it's cool when fans you wouldn't expect are huge fans of MMA. They wouldn't normally buy a pay-per-view, but they see it on TV and become huge fans of it. "

Anderson Silva, ‘Big Nog’ and Glover Teixeira dominate at UFC 153

To the surprise of few, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva easily disposed of light heavyweight Stephan Bonnar in the first round of the main event at UFC 153 in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night.

After standing at the fence to dodge Bonnar's punches early in the round, Silva pounced. He landed a knee to Bonnar's chest, then followed up with ground and pound until the fight was stopped in the first round.

"I'm not the best. I just do things that people think are impossible," Silva said after the fight. "I'm not going to fight at 205 again. I fought at 205 to save the event."

[Related: Anderson Silva stokes fire for a superfight against Jon Jones]

Silva and Bonnar took this fight on short notice after UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo was injured and had to pull out of UFC 153. Silva moved up in weight, which meant questions about his intentions to fight at a bigger weight class.

Earlier in the night, Dave Herman said in his pre-fight video that jiu-jitsu doesn't work. He may want to rethink that stance after being submitted by Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the second round.

In the second round, Nogueira grappled to get Herman close to a submission, but Herman defended each hold. But late in the round, Nogueira used beautiful jiu-jitsu to maneuver Herman into an armbar that he couldn't get out of. Herman tapped at 4:31 of the second round, giving Nogueira the win.

"I feel so happy, because this man said jiu-jitsu doesn't work. But jiu-jitsu does work. Jiu-jitsu is Brazilian. Jiu-jitsu is an art," Nogueira said.

This was Nogueira's first fight since his arm was broken by Frank Mir at UFC 140. He had surgery and intense physical therapy to rehabilitate his arm, giving him a chance to win in front of a home crowd in Rio de Janeiro.

As expected, Glover Teixeira dominated Fabio Maldonado on the way to an early stoppage win. But what wasn't expected was how Maldonado stood in for 10 minutes of straight punishment.

Teixeira knocked Maldonado down early in the first round, and proceeded to ground and pound him in a full mount for most of the round. With his face badly swollen and bruised, Maldonado managed to work his way back to his feet. Though wobbly, he did managed to punch Teixeira with a big enough punch to send him reeling, but it was the last show of offense from Maldonado.

Teixeira dominated the second round in the same way. Maldonado's face was bruised and bleeding. The doctor checked the cut halfway through the round and let the fight continue. He checked again at the end of the second, and mercifully stopped the fight.

"He is not human! I told [trainer] John Hackleman in the locker room that I was going to knock this guy out. This guy got knocked down, and he held on. He is not human," Teixeira said.

Jon Fitch showed he was anything but boring in a decision win that stopped hot prospect Erick Silva. The judges saw it 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 for Fitch.

Fitch used grappling to control Silva in the first round, but things got interesting in the second. Silva took Fitch's back and sunk in a rear--naked choke. It was the kind of choke that would stop most fighters, but Fitch survived. When Fitch maneuvered out of the choke, he took top position, waylaid Silva with strikes, then worked his grappling game.

In the last 30 seconds of the second round, Fitch took Silva's back then transitioned to an armbar. Though Silva got out, the round clearly took its toll on Silva, the much younger fighter. The third round featured Fitch taking advantage of a clearly tired Silva. It was Fitch's ground and pound at its best. He landed 108 ground strikes throughout the bout.

"I didn't have a choice. I would have beaten anyone tonight. Any weight class. I needed a win. My family needed a win," Fitch said after the bout.

Their first fight ended quickly with a no contest after an unintentional eye poke stopped Wagner Prado. This time, it was all Phil Davis, as he outgrappled Prado for two rounds. Davis used his high-level wrestling skills to control Prado and stymie any shot at striking that the young fighter may have. In the second round, Davis was close to getting an arm triangle when he transitioned to an anaconda choke. Prado tapped at 4:29.

"Normally I'm the young lion coming in, but it's a different feeling getting in the gym, knowing someone like Wagner Prado is coming to knock your block off," Davis said after the fight.

Demian Maia started off the pay-per-view with a submission that showed his world-class submission skills. Maia had Rick Story in a a rear-naked choke in the first round, but had trouble getting his elbow underneath Story's chin. He then switch to crank Story's neck. Though Story tried to hold out, blood trickled out of his nose and he tapped at 2:30 in the first round.

Reader rants: Cagereaders sound off on ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ ratings, Benson Henderson and Strikeforce

Though there haven't been a ton of huge fights lately, the MMA news never stops. This keeps our Cagereaders talking all the time. They posted their thoughts on Cagewriter's Facebook page. If you want to show up in a future reader rants, like the page and then speak up. Thank you as always for reading and sharing your thoughts!

No one is particularly surprised that ratings are so bad on "The Ultimate Fighter."

The reason it is plummeting is because of the time slot. Why in the hell would you put it on a Friday night time slot when your core viewers are not usually at home. Dana White should have left it on Spike TV at the same time slot. -- Timothy Carlson

As the article states, it used to be must watch for me, because I needed a fight fix. There are so many events now, that I don't HAVE to watch TUF. I even miss many events, which use to be unheard of for me. -- Randy Huey

Benson Henderson said he was similar to Nick Diaz, but readers did not agree.

Only thing in common is that they are great mixed martial artists, as people. Probably night and day. -- Gabriel Martinez

Oh my GOD...not even close. For one, Henderson has CLASS, something the whole Diaz clan will never possess. -- Gavin McClements

After Gilbert Melendez was injured, the Strikeforce cancellation disappointed Cagereaders.

Strikeforce has become the joke of all MMA ... Titan is a more respectable organization.. They will be folded as soon as this Showtime deal ends.. They are done... You can't cherry pick 2/3 of the best fighters from an organization and expect it to survive... -- Jason Telier

It goes back to the depth problem in SF. They only have a few, and I mean very few, headline worthy stars. Melendez and Rousey have enough pull to get people to watch, but without them it's unfortunately a lot of unknown fighters who people won't be interested to watch. -- Gabriel Martinez

One reader is not pleased by the idea of a Silva-GSP bout, which has been floated recently:

It's disappointing to hear that the UFC is taking steps toward making a "super" fight between Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre. I just don't see how any reasonable fan could think that's a compelling fight, and I don't understand why they don't make more of an effort to get Jon Jones v. Anderson Silva to be a reality. They're the same size and they finish fights. Both are creative and effective strikers and both have shown they have great ground skills and submissions. Moreover, both have, but for one disqualification loss each, obliterated almost all opponents. I love Georges St. Pierre, but he can't finish like they can, plus I think there's plenty of stiff competition for him at welterweight. Further, the UFC would be asking him to fight at a weight he's never fought at before. Even if it's a catchweight it's still different. And who is the first person he's going to fight at a brand new weight? Anderson Silva. Are you kidding? He's giving up so much in size and wingspan it's almost laughable. Plus we all have seen how St. Pierre has turned into the ultimate strategist. He's a cautious fighter. And we've also seen how Silva reacts when a fighter is hesitant and doesn't engage: Silva starts dancing around and mocking them. Who wants to watch St. Pierre, the posterboy of the UFC, get mocked in the Octagon? I sure don't and I think Jones v. Silva, for all the above-noted reasons, makes the most sense and would be a true fight for the ages. -- Michael Angelo Ilaria

Strikeforce fighters compensated after fight cancellation

After Strikeforce canceled Saturday's events, fighters worried about their finances because they didn't have the fight pay day. The good news is that they still will receive some compensation from Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC and Strikeforce.

MMA Junkie confirmed that the fighters left without a bout will get their "show money," or the amount they would get for fighting regardless of the bout's outcome. As far as the sponsors who also add to their fight night payout, it's up to each individual sponsor on how they want to proceed.

[Kevin Iole: It's time for Showtime, Strikeforce to cut losses, move on]

Since finding out they didn't have a fight, a few fighters took advantage of not having to cut weight.

Gian Villante had to cut down from 240 to 205. He was in the 220 range when the fight was canceled. He headed to Taco Bell when he heard the news.

"If I'm going to be honest, the first thing I think is, alright, I'll just go to Taco Bell, but I don't want to go crazy," Villante said to MMA Fighting. "So I went with a cheesy gordita crunch with chicken, and they have this new thing, a Doritos taco shell, that just looked amazing. That was calling my name, I went for that one. I had about three of those. I went home and there was this veal parm hero that was in the fridge for about a week now that my brother left in the refrigerator. It's been looking at me for a week and it's just torture, so, I'm like you know what, I'm eating this thing. I ate half a veal parm hero that was a week old and didn't even taste good, and then I had about a half a gallon of ice cream, chocolate chip cookie dough."

That's downright astounding. Thank goodness he is being paid at least his show money, as he might need to stock up on some healthy food to make up for that binge.

Flexible hours, nice co-workers, seeing the world: Fighters talk about fighting for a living

While it's easy to look at fighters as warriors who get in the cage to get to the highest pinnacle of the sport, it's also a job. Like everyone with a job, fighters have to put in hours at their office, do mundane tasks they wish they didn't have to do, and wish they were paid more.

But what are the best parts of being a full-time fighter? Hear from the fighters.

Let's say you had the physical gifts to be a UFC fighter. Is it still a job you would want? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.
